We need Governor Abbott to call a 5th Special Session in order for our legislators to:

  • Record inflation: the price of everything from utilities to insurance to fuel has increased significantly

  • Unfunded mandates: safety, technology, special programs, and teacher raises are all items that have been mandated by the state, which schools must cover, but for which the state has not provided adequate funding

  • Flattening of enrollment: enrollment growth has stagnated nation-wide post-covid

  • "Robin Hood" recapture scheme: a program that sends KISD property tax dollars back to the state for redistribution to other districts

  • Insufficient and outdated funding formula: the state school funding formula has not been updated since 2019

KISD Is facing a number of challenges outside of our control, including:

We need Governor Abbott to call a

5th special session.

Help us save Keller ISD as our legislature fails to get crucial funding to our schools!

Through the 88th regular session and again in four special sessions, our leaders have failed to agree on legislation that would fully fund Texas public schools.

Reform the Robin Hood scheme
that now has a surplus of $2.5 billion in funds taken from school districts

To the Honorable Governor Abbott,

As a community member in Keller ISD, I am concerned about the insufficient state funding formula that has not been changed in four years, despite 40 year record inflation.

During this time, the cost to educate our students has increased significantly.

  • Property insurance rates are up by 204%
  • Utilities and energy costs are up by 30%
  • Fuel costs are up by 97%
  • Transportation costs are up by 14%

Along with these increased costs, there are a number of mandated programs and initiatives districts are required to pay for, despite insufficient funding to do so. These include:

  • Technology for STAAR testing
  • Teacher raises
  • Safety and security
  • Special programs

At Keller ISD, our motto is “Intentionally Exceptional,” and we strive every day to give our students exceptional opportunities, with a focus not only on cultivating learners, but also on the character development and community contributions of our students. Our priority remains to provide this environment, but our current operations are not sustainable without significant funding increases.

School districts in Texas need urgent help and we are imploring you to call a fifth special session so our legislature can pass legislation to fully fund our schools.

We need legislation that would:

  • Increase the basic allotment to $7,200 to account for inflation
  • Provide ongoing funding for teacher raises (not one-time stipends that leave the burden of future raises on school districts)
  • Increase funding for unfunded mandates like safety, technology, and special programs
  • Reform the Robin Hood scheme that now has a surplus of $2.5 billion in funds taken from school districts

We appreciate your support for Texas schools and teachers and we thank you for your leadership in the great state of Texas.
