Health Screenings
The goal of health screenings in schools is to detect possible health problems and make referrals for diagnostic evaluation for the benefit of the student's educational success.
Hearing and Vision Screening
Health and Safety Code, Chapter 36, requires vision and hearing screening for all students in grades PK, K, 01, 03, 05, and 07 as well as those in other grades enrolled for the first time. Parents/guardians of students who do not pass a screening will be sent a sealed or emailed referral letter from the school nurse recommending a comprehensive exam by a physician, audiologist, or eye doctor. Spinal Screening
Health and Safety Code, Chapter 36 and 25 Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 37, requires spinal screening for girls once at age 10 or in grade 05 and again at age 12 or in grade 07, and for boys once at age 13 or 14 or in grade 8. Notification is sent to parents/guardians at least 2 weeks in advance of the scheduled spinal screening. Acanthosis Nigricans (AN)
Health and Safety Code, Chapter 95, requires AN screening, a skin marker which may indicate the risk for Type 2 Diabetes, for all students in grades 01, 03, 05, and 07. If an AN marker is noted, students will also have their blood pressure, weight, and height measured. Parents/guardians of students identified as at risk will be sent a sealed or emailed referral letter from the school nurse recommending a comprehensive exam by a physician, More information can be found here.
