Murals Bring New Life to Independence Elementary Library
A colorful mural project at Independence Elementary School is transforming the campus library into a vibrant, welcoming space for young readers.
Librarian Jessica Sustaita led the effort to create a space that celebrates the magic of books. “We wanted to inspire students and create a space where they feel excited to explore and engage with books,” Sustaita said.
The project was made possible through profits from the school’s book fairs and brought to life by Jodi Kitson, a former Keller ISD art teacher and current assistant principal. Kitson worked closely with Sustaita to design and paint the murals, a process that spanned two and a half years.
“We are so grateful for each successful book fair that made this project possible,” said Sustaita.
The mural showcases a diverse selection of books and characters, deliberately chosen to reflect beloved classics and newer titles that resonate with students. Among the featured titles is "Wordy Birdy" by author Tammi Sauer, whose visit to Independence Elementary was a major highlight for students and staff alike.
“I had been planning Tammi’s visit for months,” said Sustaita. “The students had become obsessed with all of Tammi’s books! Jodi chose Wordy Birdy for the mural, and Tammi’s visit truly brought it full circle. Seeing students meet a real-life author was incredible.”
Since the mural’s completion, the library has become a more engaging and dynamic space. Students now walk in and instantly recognize familiar characters, sparking conversations and curiosity about new books.
“One of the most rewarding parts of this project has been seeing students’ reactions,” said Sustaita. “It’s clear that this artwork has made an impact.”
