KHS Senior Wins Gold on Team USA at Baseball World Cup

Keller High School senior Cole Koeninger recently returned home from Okinawa, Japan, after a once-in-a-lifetime experience that marked a major milestone in his baseball journey. Proudly wearing red, white, and blue as a member of Team USA at the 2025 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup, Koeninger contributed to the team's gold medal victory on the international stage.

The United States secured the championship on September 14 with a 2-0 victory over Japan, marking their 11th world title in the tournament's history.

"It was an amazing experience," Koeninger said. "There is no greater honor than representing your country and playing for Team USA."

At the World Cup, Koeninger made three relief appearances, maintaining a 0.00 ERA while allowing only one hit over three innings. He pitched a scoreless inning in the tournament opening against Japan on September 5, striking out one batter. On September 13, in the Super Round finale against Puerto Rico, he got the final three outs.

He earned his spot on the team and was selected to be a pitcher through a rigorous selection process held at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C. The process began with 90 players invited to the first phase of trials, followed by a second phase where 40 players were invited back. From that group, just 20 athletes, including Koeninger, were chosen to represent the United States. Koeninger said this experience will benefit him in the future.

"I learned a greater level of respect for the game and my team, character, brotherhood, and to leave no regrets," he said. "I also learned about different cultures. Being around the teams from other countries was very cool."

Koeninger, who plays shortstop and pitcher for the Keller HS baseball team, began playing baseball at the age of five. He credits his readiness for the trials and eventual selection to Team USA to his high school and summer teams.

"All of my coaches over the years and my family have influenced me to have a strong work ethic and set goals to strive for," he said. "I thank God for my successes and USA Baseball for the opportunity."

After high school, he has committed to play baseball for the University of Tennessee.
