Do families need to pay a fee in order for students to attend the Virtual Learning Academy?
The Virtual Learning Academy is FREE. There is no charge for students residing in Keller ISD boundaries who are entering grades 3-8 in the 2021-2022 school year.

How is virtual learning different from remote learning?
Virtual learning is designed to be a more personalized instructional experience with a blend of synchronous and asynchronous learning that closely follows the typical schedule of the instructional school day.
Students will engage with subject area content by leveraging digital tools to promote student independence using 21st-century skills.

How do I know if virtual learning is a good fit for my student?
Students who are ready for a virtual learning experience show initiative, possess a deep desire to learn on their own, demonstrate flexibility and persistence, communicate their needs effectively, stay positive through difficulty, manage time wisely, meet deadlines, and work productively.

How will my student get a technology device?
Virtual Learning Academy students will be assigned technology devices prior to the beginning of the school year.

Will my 3rd-5th grade student participate in co-curr classes?
Students will participate in both asynchronous and synchronous courses in Physical Education and Fine Arts.

Can students in 6th-8th grade participate in UIL/NCAA athletics and fine arts activities if he/she attends the Virtual Learning Academy?
Although students will not participate in sanctioned UIL/NCAA athletics or fine arts events, they will have opportunities to explore and pursue areas of interest.

Will my student attend field trips and school-day events?
Students will transfer to the Keller ISD Virtual Learning Academy for the full school year which then becomes the student’s new home campus. Students will have opportunities to participate in events offered by the Virtual Learning Academy.

Will my student be able to transfer back to his or her home campus during the school year?
Enrollment in the Virtual Learning Academy requires a transfer from a student’s current campus, and only one transfer is allowed during a school year. Absent extenuating circumstances, a transfer back to the student’s home campus will not be granted during the school year.

Will students in special programs be able to participate in the Virtual Learning Academy?
Keller ISD provides a continuum of services to meet the unique needs of students. All program services are possible – RTI, §504, and SpEd accommodations can be provided by classroom teachers as normal.
Families are encouraged to learn more about the potential opportunities and challenges of virtual learning in order to determine if this form of instructional delivery best fits their student's preferred learning style and needs.

What curriculum will the Virtual Learning Academy use?
All Keller ISD virtual learning courses are aligned to District curriculum. Virtual learning courses will be designed and delivered using the Canvas Learning Management System utilizing best practices for online course design.

Who will be teaching my student?
Keller ISD teachers who are specially trained through a rigorous training program in virtual learning best practices and effective online course design will facilitate instruction for the Virtual Learning Academy students.

Who will I contact if I have questions about the expectations for my student?
Academy teachers and administrators are available to answer questions about course expectations. Families will be introduced to staff and receive contact information at the start of the school year.

Will the Virtual Learning Academy be available after next school year?
Keller ISD intends for the KISD Virtual Learning Academy to be a permanent campus.

Will my student have to be on a physical campus to attend the virtual learning academy?
The intention for the virtual learning academy is to allow students the ability to complete their courses at home with no required time on a physical campus.

Will my student be required to participate in scheduled class times with their virtual teachers and/or peers?
The specific schedules for the virtual learning academy have not been developed yet, but will include times when students will be interacting with their peers and teacher on a scheduled, or synchronous basis. These interactions will occur through a virtual platform such as Microsoft Teams or Google Meets.
