UIL Realignment: KHS, FR, CHS to 7-5A; TCHS starts in 5-4A

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) released its biennial football and basketball reclassifications and realignments for Texas high schools on Feb. 1.

Keller, Fossil Ridge and Central high schools remained in Class 5A, but moved from District 5-5A to 7-5A joining Coppell, Denton Guyer, Northwest, Saginaw and Southlake Carroll. Guyer and Saginaw are both in Class 5A for the first time.

Timber Creek High School will begin its first year of varsity competition next year in Class 4A and joins District 5-4A which includes Aledo, Azle, Boswell, Birdville, Brewer, Byron Nelson, and Springtown. Northwest ISD's Byron Nelson High School and Timber Creek both opened in August 2009.

Spring meet and other district alignments will be released by the UIL no later than April 15.

UIL is the governing body for Texas high school athletic, fine arts and athletic competition and realigns the state's schools every two years based on campus enrollment. The enrollment cutoff for Class 5A this year was 2,065, down from 2,085 two years ago. It is the first time in 20 years that the cutoff enrollment for the state's highest classification has been lower than it was for the previous realignment.
