TMIS's Donalyn Miller 2010 Region XI Teacher of the Year

Keller ISD's Donalyn Miller, a language arts teacher at Trinity Meadows Intermediate, was named 2010 Regional Elementary Teacher of the Year.

The announcement was made during a Education Service Center Region XI banquet Tuesday, August 10. Forty-nine teachers, representing 26 school districts in Region XI participated in this year's competition.

The Teacher of the Year Program, sponsored by the Texas Education Agency, allows districts to submit one elementary and one secondary candidate to compete at the regional and state levels.

Ms. Miller now moves on to compete at the state level for the Texas Teacher of the Year award. The Texas Education Agency will meet with selection committees to review the applications of the regional winners on August 16, 2010. At that time, three elementary teachers and three secondary teachers will be named as state semifinalists in the competition. These six semifinalists will then travel to Austin for an interview with the selection committees on September 11, 2010.  The elementary and secondary state winners will be announced at a state ceremony October 22, 2010.

Ms. Miller received her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from the University of North Texas in Denton.  She is currently working on her master’s degree in reading from UNT.  She recently published The Book Whisperer, a book describing her beliefs about teaching reading and classroom practices that she employs to increase student reading achievement and motivation.
