Keller ISD welcomes back more than 33,000 students this week

Keller ISD welcomed 33,200 students back to school in its now 38 campuses on the first day, Monday, August 23.

Two brand new schools welcomed students through the doors on the first day to smiling and excited faculty and staff. KISD opened Timberview Middle School and the Keller Early Learning Center for the first time this week.

The Keller Early Learning Center holds the district’s prekindergarten programs, as well as special education programs like PPCD, STACCP and TALK. The campus has several features that separate it from other district facilities including the alphabet imbedded on the hallway floors and walls to promote active learning throughout the building, and rotating walls that allow collaboration between some classrooms.

Timberview serves 5-8 grade students and features many unique design features including classrooms organized in unique groups that surround collaboration spaces and rotating walls that provide students the opportunity to share small group projects with a larger assembly of their peers.

The new campus is the district’s first to be built the standards of the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED). The LEED for Schools rating system is a program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council that recognizes the unique nature of the design and construction of K-12 schools.

  • Some of Timberview’s green features include:
  • An energy garden
  • Light harvesting
  • Geothermal HVAC
  • Reduced volatile organic carbons (VOC)
  • Reflective surfaces
  • Enhanced natural lighting

The first day was a success at the district’s other 36 campuses as well as the best students, parents, teachers and principals in the country made for a smooth first day of school.
