Census in Schools Week is coming March 22-26

The Keller Independent School District recognizes what an accurate census count of residents can do for our community.

Census numbers are used to establish congressional districts and to allocate more than $300 billion in federal funds for items such as emergency services, schools, roads, and many quality-of-life services.

KISD is committed to promoting awareness of the 2010 US Census Day which is April 1, 2010.

KISD has designated March 22-26 “Census in Schools Week”. This week will be dedicated to 2010 census lessons and related activities to teach the entire student body and/or individual classes about the census. With units for grades K-12, the free education program combines wall maps with online lessons that meet core standards in map literacy, graphing, reading, writing and civic responsibility.

By using the program in our district’s classrooms, we are helping to ensure that all of our students and the members of their households are counted in the 2010 Census and that our communities – and schools – receive their fair share of state and federal funding. Annually, more than $300 billion spent on education, transportation, and healthcare is based on census data. Let’s make sure our children are counted.

Apart from what it teaches students, the 2010 Census: It’s About Us program is intended to:

  • Help enlist students as vital census advocates
  • Convey the importance of 100% census participation
  • Allay concerns some parents or guardians may have about the census due to misinformation or language barriers
  • Boost the effectiveness of the once-a-decade U.S. Census for the benefit of individuals, schools, families, communities and our nation.
