Board Reinstates Free Bus Transportation in Keller ISD

Keller ISD’s Board of Trustees approved changes to student transportation reinstating free transportation to regular education students living more than two miles away from their home campus.

Free bus transportation will begin with the start of the Spring Semester on Wednesday, January 23.

In this new model, students living outside of the two-mile range of their campus will no longer be charged to ride the bus to and from school. However, under this model, students within the two-mile range will continue to have the option to purchase bus service for $75 per semester, that’s down from $175 per semester.

Families had the opportunity to register for service during the December enrollment period. Families that still need to register can do so at kisd.busrideonline.com.

State budget cuts prior to the 2011-12 school year prompted Keller ISD to begin charging students for bus service.

Keller ISD administration developed the “blended model” after compiling lower-than-expected ridership numbers and not receiving a state reimbursement for Special Education students and Curriculum and Technology Education students.  The model is expected to provide more state revenue and to be complemented by additional income from greater ridership within the two-mile radius.

The new “blended transportation model” will be implemented beginning Wednesday, January 23, 2013.

Registration for new bus riders took place December 1-14. For more information about registration or about refunds for the second semester, please contact the Keller ISD Transportation Department at 817-744-1300.
