Why is Graduation on a Sunday?

Why are Keller ISD's spring graduation ceremonies on a Sunday this year?

Keller ISD's three high schools with graduating classes will hold their 2010 graduation ceremonies on Sunday, June 6 at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

Though KISD has enjoyed Saturday graduations for the past few years, a previously understood scheduling conflict required this year's ceremonies to be held on Sunday.

The district has held its graduations at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Downtown Fort Worth since 2003. The venue's size (10,500 seats) and location (fewer than 18 miles from any of KISD's three high schools with graduating classes) have made it an ideal option over previous locations. KISD graduations have previously held at locations such as the University of North Texas Coliseum in Denton (10,040 seats, more than 27 miles away) and Prestonwood Baptist Church (7,000 seats, more than 38 miles away).

While the district prefers to schedule the graduations for Keller, Fossil Ridge and Central high schools together on a Saturday, KISD was aware that a previously scheduled Shriner's Convention would prevent that in 2010. After much exploration into other possible locations and dates for the event, it was decided that the Sunday graduation was the best possible solution for this year.

Because many local churches and places of worship traditionally hold services on Sundays, the start times for this year's graduations have been pushed back later in the day. Keller ISD has also sent information about the graduations to local churches to make them aware of the Sunday graduations and so that they may inform their congregations, giving them ample time to prepare for any interruptions in their normal Sunday schedule that day.

Scheduled times for the Sunday, June 6 graduations at the Fort Worth Convention Center are as follows:

Keller High: Noon
Central High: 4 p.m.
Fossil Ridge High: 8 p.m.

The 10,500-seat Fort Worth Convention Center Arena holds dozens of graduation ceremonies each spring. Keller ISD is one of six school districts that will holds its graduation ceremonies at the venue on a Sunday in 2010. The arena also hosted four Sundays with graduations in 2009 including Birdville ISD, while it held graduations on six Sundays in 2008.

Keller ISD has already confirmed the date of 2011 graduation ceremonies to be held on Saturday, June 4.
